My Story
Hello! I’m Flora Gamez Grateron, a Texas native, and I have been writing most of my life. Born the seventh child of nine, my stories and poems reflect the complexity and rewards of living within a large Mexican-American family rich in culture and tradition. My work has been published in The Blue Guitar, an arts and literary magazine of the Arizona Consortium for the Arts, and in La Bloga, a Flor y Canto out of Los Angeles speaking out on immigration issues. The Corrido on my then 89-year-old dad (who passed away at 102 years old on December 13, 2023) was one of the winners at the Tucson Meet Yourself Festival in 2010. I have been published in the Oasis Journal of 2010. My work was also published in an Anthology titled Our Spirit, Our Reality with the Sowing the Seeds writers’ group. I created and belong to a women’s writers’ group in Tucson named Rincon Writers, a group that has been meeting for over a decade. I retired in November 2020 as an educator in the Sunnyside Unified School District as a middle school teacher. I have four awesome children and live in Tucson, Arizona. My book Through the Door, Cuentos de Casa was published in July 2023 and my second book Open Doors, Cuentos de Familia is in publication and coming out soon.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Andrea
This is a powerful book in so many ways. The stories are rich and moving. And the author provides mini-lessons to guide readers in their own writing. I just found this a beautiful way to share the heart of the stories and build a relationship with the audience

This amazing book offers the reader memorable quotes and prompts that are helpful in writing their own stories. Flora is a gifted author and shares family stories that capture your heart

Erica
A collection of short stories and poems that invite you into the author's life with warmth. After reading, you feel as if you've had a beautiful visit with her and her family. Some are melancholy, some are funny, some are spooky, and all of them are reflective and engaging. You get a brief look into the memories that have touched the author throughout her life. An added bonus is that there are prompts and challenge words throughout the book allowing you to also be reflective of your own experiences and to paint your life in such a meaningful way as well

There is something fun and unique in every page, and I loved the ghost stories, they had me laughing. Her stories brought back many memories of my past. Her poems are beautifully written too. I appreciated the prompts at the end of each chapter. This book also belongs in a classroom!

Merrill
Flora and I have belonged to the same writing group for years, and when we share our stories every month, hers always stand out for the many layers of expression. Speaking of layers, my favorite piece in Through the Door, is Lemon Meringue Pie, a poem I think about everyday.

This book was super creative in both its structure and storytelling. It was fun strolling down memory lane, reading about family stories and then writing about my own experience. After each story, there is a prompt and key words so you can write your own journey. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a combination of reading, writing, journaling, and self-exploration. Heartfelt anthology.

On October 19, 2024, I received the Silver Medal Award for Best First Book Nonfiction from the International Latino Book Awards at City College in Los Angeles, California for my book, “Through the Door, Cuentos de Casa.” It was a beautiful well organized ceremony with many attendees as well as a luncheon. My daughter, Angelica, and I attended together. We had a spectacular time and took many photographs. I was also interviewed and responded to several questions. What a memorable day that was!
