Guest Author at Pima Community College Writing Class

On June 6, 2024 I was invited to be a guest author by Dr. Carmen Salvo for her online English Composition for English Language Learner Course. I used a selection from my book Through the Door, Cuentos de Casa, titled Reflection in the Mirror. I read the poem to students and we discussed what they see when they look at their reflection in the mirror. They responded to questions such as, “Why do we look into mirrors? What are we looking for? Do you ever see your younger self in the mirror? What do you see?” I guided them through a lesson using the terms self-discovery,  self-awareness and self-knowledge. And then we broke it down into four separate parts: Part 1: Childhood Memories, Part 2: Challenges and Triumphs, Part 3: Transformation and Growth, and Part 4: Career and Aspirations. The first stanza of my poem starts with: “The silver piece of glass reflects back, blunt and honest, there is no distortion to blame, it is fair and impartial. I stand before it…” They wrote honest pieces in response, most in poetry form. They did a fantastic job!
